Health Care Providers Impact Statement for Kitsap County

Number of docs in 2009: 514. That's 21.3 physicians per 10,000 population1, the fifth-highest rate in western Washington. Washington's rate is 21.2 physicians per 10,000; the national average is about 20.2 per 10,0002. Washington imports about 85% of its physicians from other states or nations.3

Health professional breakout:

---Harrison Medical Center operates hospitals in Bremerton and Silverdale and urgent care facilities in Port Orchard and Belfair. It employs 48 MDs, four DOs, five physician assistants and nine nurse practitioners at its Bremerton hospital. It also lists 269 MDs, 15 DOs, one physician assistant, one nurse practitioner and 13 dentists as affiliated providers.

---Harrison Medical Center employs nine physicians at its Silverdale hospital. In Port Orchard, it has 15 MDs, three DOs and seven nurse practitioners. In Poulsbo, it employs five physicians and two nurse practitioners.

---Group Health's clinic in Port Orchard employs eight MDs, two physician assistants and three nurse practitioners.

---Group Health's Poulsbo clinic has six MDs, one physician assistant and one nurse practitioner.

---Group Health's clinic in Silverdale has 23 MDs, eight physician assistants and four nurse practitioners.

---The Veterans Administration has three MDs and a nurse practitioner in Kitsap County.

---The U.S. Navy also operates a hospital in Bremerton and a clinic in Silverdale.4

---Harrison Medical Center has 54 UW School of Medicine graduates among its staff and affiliated providers. It also lists 28 physicians who did residencies and 16 who did fellowships in Washington. In addition, three physician assistants graduated from the UW program and three from the UW dental school.  

---Group Health's clinics in Port Orchard and Poulsbo each have one UW medical graduate, two former residents and one graduate of UW's physician assistant program.

---Group Health's Silverdale Medical Center has five UW medical graduates and three physician assistant graduates. It also has six doctors who did their residencies in Washington.

---The Veterans' Administration employs two UW School of Medicine graduates in Kitsap County.6

 
The naval hospital in Bremerton accepts six new medical residents a year. Bremerton also serves as a site for medical students looking to practice their skills in a rural setting between their first and second years (Rural/Underserved Opportunities Program).7
