Number of docs in 2009: 31. That’s 20 physicians per 10,000 population1, the seventh-highest rate in western Washington. Washington’s rate is 21.2 physicians per 10,000; the national average is about 20.2 per 10,000.2 Washington imports about 85% of its physicians from other states or nations.3

---The Inter Island Medical Center in Friday Harbor employs five MDs and one physician assistant. It also uses the services of two nurse practitioners in private practice. Island Hospital in Anacortes has two clinics in San Juan County. Its Lopez Island facility has one physician and one nurse practitioner. Its Eastsound facility on Orcas Island employs two MDs and one physician assistant.
