Middle Level Mathematics Endorsement

The Middle Level Mathematics Add-On Endorsement program is a statewide program designed for practicing teachers who wish to expand their areas of endorsement, with coursework available via face-to-face instruction and AMS videoconference.

Course prerequisites include completion of the following with a “C” or better:

Math 106 College Algebra, or an appropriate math placement score.
Math 252 Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers II, or an endorsement in elementary education.

Courses for the endorsement include the following:

Math 151 Calculus for Middle School Teachers
Math 303 Higher Geometry
Math 351 Algebraic Thinking for Middle School Teachers
Tch_Lrn 426/533 Middle Level Mathematics Methods
Tch_Lrn 427/534 Proportional Reasoning

Candidates must pass the NES in Middle Grades Mathematics in order to apply for the add-on endorsement.

Enrollment options

Teachers who wish to add the Middle Level Math Endorsement to their certificates may participate in the program in two ways. (Pre-certified teachers should consult with their advisors for program application information, and begin the program after their first “block” of education courses.)

Non-degree seeking graduate student

Students may participate in the endorsement program as a non-degree seeking graduate student. To apply, students should submit the following:

•     Apply online to the WSU graduate school as a non-degree seeking graduate student (Select Ed.M. Curriculum and Instruction Non-Degree) (www.gradschool.wsu.edu)

•     Completed endorsement program application.

•     Copy of valid teacher certificate.

•     Official transcripts for any coursework that is applicable to the add-on endorsement (including prerequisites)

•     A Middle Level Math Endorsement self-evaluation worksheet if you have taken courses you believe will count toward the endorsement.

Non-degree, post-baccalaureate application

Students may also participate in the endorsement program as a non-degree seeking post-baccalaureate student. (Please note, classes taken as a as a post-bacc student may never be applied to a graduate degree.) To apply submit the following to the Spokane campus:

•     Apply to university as a non-degree seeking post-baccalaureate student (contact undergrad admissions)

•     Completed endorsement program application

•     Copy of valid teacher certificate.

•     Official transcripts for any coursework that is applicable to the add-on endorsement (including prerequisites)

•     A Middle Level Math Endorsement self-evaluation worksheet if you have taken courses you believe will count toward the endorsement.

•     $50 check payable to WSU for evaluation/application fee.

Application Process and Timelines

The Middle Level Mathematics Endorsement Program admits students each semester. Please note that application is a multi-step process and often takes four to six weeks to complete. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Application deadlines

  • November 1, last day to apply for spring semester (January start).
  • March 15, last day to apply for summer semester (May start)
  • June 15, last day to apply for fall semester (August start)

Steps to application:

  • Apply online to the WSU Graduate School for acceptance to the university.
  • Submit supplemental materials to the department for acceptance into the certificate program.
