Interdisciplinary Design Institute

ACADEMICS

The Interdisciplinary Design Institute partners with the School of Architecture, the Department of Interior Design and the Department of Landscape Architecture to provide opportunities for students to pursue the following degrees on the WSU Spokane campus:

Doctor of Design

One of only two Doctor of Design programs in the nation, the D.Des furthers both the art and the science of design through interdisciplinary inquiry, critical synthesis, and problem solving. It is intended for persons who are well versed and professionally advanced in the design profession and who seek to make original contributions to their fields.

Master of Architecture (M.Arch)

An NAAB accredited degree, the M.Arch leads to preparation for professional practice in Architecture. Applicants with prior degrees in Architecture may apply for the 1.5 and 2.5 year tracks at WSU Spokane. Applicants with non-architecture degrees will be considered for the 3.5 year program starting on the WSU Pullman campus.

Master of Arts in Interior Design

The nationally ranked MA degree offers one of the few three-year tracks available nationwide and caters to those with a bachelor’s degree in something other than design. Individuals with a prior design degree interested in advanced design research or preparation for teaching can complete a research thesis in the two-year track.

Master of Science in Landscape Architecture

The MSLA program emphasizes urban and suburban design and community planning.  Applicants with prior degrees in landscape architecture engage in critical investigation, research, and scholarship within the context of the Northern Rocky Mountain Bioregion. Those with a non-design background will spend one year at WSU Pullman building foundation knowledge in landscape design, construction and technology before completing the program in Spokane.

Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design

This undergraduate degree begins at WSU Pullman or at Spokane Falls Community College and offers a balanced approach in interior design with exposure to art, architecture and humanities. Studies culminate at the Interdisciplinary Design Institute after two years at WSU Pullman or three years at SFCC.
