The art & science of design
The Interdisciplinary Design Institute at WSU Spokane offers the Doctor of Design (D. Des) program, which furthers both the art and the science of design through interdisciplinary inquiry, critical synthesis, and problem solving.
At the same level of academic standards as a PhD, the D. Des focuses on applied research and emphasizes the advancement of knowledge in the design disciplines.
It is intended for persons who are well versed and
professionally advanced in the design profession and
who seek to make original contributions to their
fields.
The D. Des addresses a demonstrated void in design
education by specifically bridging education, research,
and practice within a philosophical and pedagogical
framework of interdisciplinary inquiry and critical
synthesis.
For the purpose of this degree, "design" is broadly defined as the creative integration of disparate components of knowledge, resources and experience towards an applied outcome that contributes to socio-cultural well being.
