Washington State University Spokane

Interdisciplinary Design Institute

Program faculty

Students meet several faculty through the required core and supportive elective courses, and will choose a minimum of three members to serve on their doctoral committee. Members of the committee will share both an expertise and a passion for the work being pursued by each student.

As interdisciplinary collaboration is a key element to success in the doctoral program, students are encouraged to develop relationships with faculty outside the design disciplines.  The resources available across the university exist to support students in nurturing these connections.

Advisory Committee

The major professor (committee chair) creates an ethos of collegiality that encourages creative and independent learning, helps the student clearly understand research expectations and deadlines, and provide verbal and written evaluations of student work in a timely manner.  The chair also helps students to identify appropriate doctoral committee member, develop the program of study, remind students of deadlines and paperwork, and establish regular progress meetings.

To complete the doctoral advisory committee, students must choose two other faculty members whose qualifications and interests support the scope of the research. Although the Doctor of Design is administered through WSU Spokane, participating faculty are located University-wide.
