Jo Ann Asher Thompson has been with Washington State University since 1985. She is a professor of interior design in the Interdisciplinary Design Institute at WSU Spokane. She served as department chair from 1985–1990 and 1992–1997 and as acting vice provost/vice provost from 1990–1992. Thompson served as the vice chancellor of WSU Spokane from 2005 to 2008. Thompson holds degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia and Iowa State University. Her teaching and research interests include distance education and virtual learning environments, interior environments and behavior, design criticism and theory, and educator and practitioner relationships. |

Other experience includes a variety of teaching and administrative positions at University of Tennessee, Knoxville, University of Missouri-Columbia, and University of Northern Iowa.Thompson has served in national and international leadership positions in several disciplinary and professional organizations. These positions include vice president, president, and chairman of the board for the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC); site visitation chair and accreditation committee member for the Council of Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA); and validation committee member for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ).
Thompson was awarded fellow status by the IDEC in 1994 and by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) in 1995. She currently serves as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Interior Design, the premier academic journal for interior design research and creative endeavors. In 2002 she was named IIDA Educator of the Year.
