Interdisciplinary Design Institute

Students

Hear David Allen, vice president of construction firm McKinstry, rave about our graduates in this interview with Paul Casey from Casey Communications Inc. in Seattle.

The Interdisciplinary Design Institute annually welcomes over 125 students from all over the world to study in the interdisciplinary context offered on the WSU Spokane campus. Our students bring diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences that add to the collaborative environment at the Institute.

DES-IGN Association

The purpose of the DES-IGN Association is to develop student leadership, intellectual engagement, and communication regarding interdisciplinary design. The Association will promote campus discourse regarding the role of design in facing challenges in contemporary society and will create a climate that supports opportunities for student development through promoting and sponsoring gallery exhibitions, design competitions, lectures, professional networking and special events.

Any doctoral, graduate or professional level student currently enrolled at WSU Spokane is eligible for active membership through a self-selection process.

DES-IGN Association elections

The Des-ign Association will hold elections for the Board of Directors in April.  The Board organizes events to support design discussions within the IDI and across the Spokane campus.  The Association is funded through ASWSUS student fees.  Five Board positions are available:

What do students say about their Interdisciplinary Design Institute experience?

Isil Oygur, Doctor of Design Candidate:

•"When coming from abroad, a student has many expectations from a program. In four years at the IDI, my expectations have contiually been exceeded through prompt support and guidance from faculty and staff. I have been given the chance to break through existing disciplinary boundaries while integrating knowledge and exploring ideas from new perspectives. I have been steadily challeneged, guided and pushed forward in my design research throughout my educational experience."

Jeff Walls, graduate of the Master of Architecture program currently employed with Jon Graves Architects and Planners, Tacoma, WA:

•"Having completed my BS in Architectural Studies at WSU, choosing a graduate school was easy. WSU Spokane's M.Arch program offers a well-rounded education, with a small student-to-faculty ratio that enables close interaction, both in and outside of the classroom. I enjoyed the study tours, particularly the architectural tour of the Netherlands in my last year!"

Michael Bishopp, Senior GIS Analyst for the City of Bellevue and graduate of the MS Landscape Architecture:

•"It has been great to work with quality professors and with state-of-the-art equipment to further my understanding of GIS and its application within landscape architecture. I know the skills and contacts that I have garnered from my educational experience at WSU Spokane will open new doors and new possibilities for the future."
