Speech & Hearing Sciences at WSU


Speech and hearing sciences emphasizes the physiological, neurological, behavioral, and psychological dimensions of normal and disordered communication across the lifespan.

The Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences offers programs leading to a bachelor of arts in speech and hearing sciences and a master of arts in speech and hearing sciences in speech-language pathology.

Training in speech and hearing sciences through the bachelor's level degree is considered a pre-professional degree. State and national clinical and educational certifications require completion of the master's degree.

Graduate students are prepared as speech-language pathologists to provide direct and consultative services in educational and medical settings.

Dr. Ella Inglebret has been elected as a fellow in the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), a lifetime honor extended to fewer than one percent of ASHA members. More »

Nancy Potter received the WSU Spokane Faculty Excellence Award for excellence in teaching, research, and service. Potter is a national leader in new pedagogies, including human simulation guidelines for endoscopy training. Her pioneering, interdisciplinary research examining the interactive factors and systems that affect motor speech disorders has made her the nationally and internationally renowned expert on the speech and language problems in individuals with galactosemia. A founding member of RIPER (Riverpoint Interprofessional Education and Research), she has been a leader in promoting interprofessional collaboration.

Professor Amy Meredith received the 2012 Washington State University Distinguished Teaching Award for outstanding achievements and contributions to undergraduate education. Meredith was recognized for her inspired, innovative, and effective teaching and mentoring.
