Reading Endorsement

WSU's Reading Endorsement provides the skills and strategies necessary for those who wish to increase dramatically their knowledge of the teaching of reading as well as their cultural competence—awareness, sensitivity, and support of diverse populations—in relation to the literacy growth of students in P-12. Our program embeds curriculum development, pedagogical skills, and diagnostic assessment with tutoring experience.

The Reading Add-On Endorsement program is designed for practicing teachers who wish to expand their areas of endorsement, with coursework available in Spokane via face-to-face instruction and AMS videoconference.

PLEASE NOTE: As a PREREQUISITE, transcripts should evidence coursework in children's literature, reading and writing K-8 and ESL K-8, with completion at a "C" or better. If prerequisites are not met, students will need to take additional courses for the endorsement program.

The Reading Endorsement Program requires 13 to 22 credits.

Four core courses for the endorsement include the following:

T&L 528 Literacy within the Disciplines.
T&L 551 Psychology of Reading
T&L 553 Assessment Instruction in Reading K-8
T&L 558 Improving Comprehension through Literature
Candidates must pass the West-E in Reading in order to apply for the add-on endorsement.

Teachers who wish to add the Reading Endorsement to their certificates may participate in the program in two ways:

Non-degree, post-baccalaureate application

Submit the following to the Spokane campus:

•Official transcripts for any coursework that is applicable to the add-on endorsement (including prerequisites)
