Sleep and Performance Research Center

Panoramic of sleep suite

World-class facility and equipment

Our 10,000-square-foot facility in the South Campus Facility contains two cutting-edge laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art tools to make objective measurements of sleep and performance.

The sleep research laboratory contains everything needed to accommodate studies lasting many consecutive days, including four bedrooms, a central observation room, and a large common area with a kitchenette. There is also a clinical area that can be used both as part of the research lab (e.g., for the application of EEG electrodes and for collecting biological samples) or as a separate space for the screening of research volunteers (e.g., physical exams, processing and storing of blood samples).

Immediately adjacent to the sleep research laboratory, the simulation laboratory is equipped to simulate critical tasks performed by police officers, military personnel, commercial drivers and others who work in 24/7 operational settings. The lab’s simulation equipment can measure a wide range of neurobehavioral and physiological variables, including alertness, situational awareness, arousal management, violent encounter judgment and decision making, communication, and driving skills.

Equipment in the laboratory includes:

  • State-of-the-art computer workstations for cognitive performance assessment
  • High-fidelity driving simulators
  • Deadly force simulators for measuring judgment and decision making skills in violent and non-violent encounters
  • High-end amplifiers for polysomnographic sleep recordings and event-related potential measurements
  • Advanced near-infrared optical devices for brain metabolism monitoring
  • Fully integrated local area network with time synchronization of measurement devices
  • Comprehensive audiovisual monitoring and recording
  • Ultra-low temperature freezer for biological sample storage
