Hazardous Materials Accident/Release
If a chemical spill occurs:
If a chemical spill were to occur take the following steps:
- Evacuate to a safe zone. A safe zone is an area that is a minimum of 3 blocks away, OR Shelter In Place and take the necessary steps to secure the building. Shut off the HVAC system.
If toxic chemicals come in contact with your skin, immediately flush the affected area with clean water for 15 minutes. Use safety showers and/or eye wash stations, if available.
Have someone call 911 IMMEDIATELY, and then call Riverpoint Campus Security at 509.358.7995.
If there is any possible danger, evacuate your area.
Notify your supervisor of the extent and location of the spill.
Notify Environmental Health and Safety at 509.358.7994.
If a chemical fire occurs:
Report the fire as a “chemical fire” calling 911 IMMEDIATELY, and then call Riverpoint Campus Security at 509.358.7995.
If an airborne release occurs:
Immediately evacuate the area.
Describe the substance and the amount of the release, if possible.
Do not re-enter a contaminated area until cleared to do so by competent authority.
Notify Environmental Health and Safety at 509.368.6699/509.358.7994.
Complete an on line Incident Report form and forward it, within 24 hours, as directed. The on line Incident Report form may be found at http://www.hrs.wsu.edu/How%20to%20File%20a%20Claim or Facilities Operations at 509.358.7994. “Immediately report accidents which result in death, serious injury (e.g., fracture, amputation) or in-patient hospitalization of WSU personnel or third parties.” This applies to all personnel on the Riverpoint Campus, including WSU Spokane, EWU, SIRTI and SIRTI tenants.
