Biomedical Seminar Series
May 7, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Dr. Radhika Basheer, Associate Professor at Harvard University Medical School, Sleep Medicine Department, will present Multifaceted Role of the Basal Forebrain in the Regulation of Sleep-Wake Behavior.
The Basal Forebrain, historically recognized for its wake-promoting role, contains both wake and sleep active neurons. In the past decade, pharmacological and optogenetic investigations have shed more light on the interactive role of various neurotransmitters within basal forebrain and associated areas in regulating both sleep and wakefulness, as well as sleep homeostasis following prolonged wakefulness. The presentation will integrate the work from other labs as well as ours, describing a multifaceted role of basal forebrain in sleep-wake regulation.
