ESFCOM Clinical Research Series – Connecting with Our Clinicians

June 7, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Zoom

Jack Singer, M.D., Hematology/Oncology: The role of the innate immune system in inflammatory, metabolic, and neoplastic diseases; Potentials for clinical intervention

The scope of the talk will start with a description of the innate immune system and how it responds to cellular damage. Singer will discuss the downstream signaling and biological effects of this in initiating the inflammatory response. In the final part of the discussion, Singer will describe an experimental  drug that he helped develop that may have broad application in demonstrating that modulation of the innate immune response may have important clinical benefits in a variety of disorders including metabolic syndrome, autoimmune diseases, type 2 diabetes and certain malignancies.

Doug Hiller, M.D., Orthopedics: The Labman Project:  Unconventional Research for an Unconventional Sport

Triathlon is a recently created and popularized sport. The Mount Everest of the sport is the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon World Championship, which was founded in 1978. Eighteen years after the first Ironman race, Triathlon was named an Olympic sport, with its debut at the Sydney 2000 games. Hiller first completed the Ironman in 1982 and became fascinated by the physiology and medicine of the sport. With like-minded friends, he founded the Labman Exercise Research Group in 1984. The group pursued research on this unconventional sport by unconventional means, at the Institute for Environmental Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Hiller would like to share some of the challenges, lessons and results of this project.

There will be a round table discussion with a light lunch served following the presentation from 1 – 2 p.m. Contact Karina Bloom if you are interested in joining, or if you would prefer a one-on-one meeting with a presenter.
