National Library of Medicine Traveling Exhibit

December 1, 2016 - January 18, 2017

On display at the WSU Spokane Academic library now is “The Literature of Prescription”, a traveling exhibit from the National Library of Medicine that describes the life of a female writer whose physician discouraged her from having a career. The writer, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, was born in 1860 and wrote a short story, “The Yellow Wallpaper,” that was seen as an indictment of the medical profession and the societal restrictions on women’s professional and creative opportunities of the time.

The exhibit is comprised of six display panels featuring photographs and paragraphs about Gilman’s life and is on display through noon on January 18, 2017. The Yellow Paper was rediscovered by feminists in the 1970s. More information is available on the NLM web site here.
