Sleep and Performance Research Center Seminar Series Special Lecture

Dr. Philippa Gander is a Research Professor at the Sleep/Wake Research Centre at Massey University. Her original research training was in chronobiology (PhD University of Auckland, New Zealand, 1980). After a Senior Fulbright Fellowship at Harvard Medical School (1980-1982), she joined the Fatigue Countermeasures Program at NASA, returning to New Zealand to establish the Sleep/Wake Research Centre in 1998.

Dr. Gander has a particular interest in integrating scientific knowledge with sector expertise to improve the management of sleep, fatigue and shift work in a range of industries including healthcare, and has received multiple national and international awards for her work in this area. Her presentation will cover findings from a recent national survey of New Zealand nurses’ work patterns, a new endorsed National Code of Practice for managing fatigue and shift work for hospital-based nursing, and implementation trials that are now being developed.

Dr. Gander’s national and international awards include a NASA Group Achievement Award, Fatigue Countermeasures Program (1993), a BP International Chairman’s Award (1998), Fellow of the New Zealand Royal Society in Technology and Applied Sciences (2009), Flight Safety Foundation – Airbus Human Factors Award (2012), and Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the study of sleep and fatigue (2017).
