“Sensorimotor Processing Deficits Underlying Stuttering: an EEG investigation of dorsal stream dynamics”
ABSTRACT: Stuttering is linked to deficient sensorimotor processing across a network of anterior (motor) and posterior (auditory) dorsal stream regions. Data from a series of EEG studies will be presented exploring activity within the sensorimotor mu rhythm in people who do and do not stutter across a variety of speech-based tasks, with results interpreted as a measure of information processing across the dorsal stream. Findings suggest the presence of an underlying sensorimotor instability in people who stutter, which is discussed in relation to clinical applications and theoretical implications.
BIO: David Jenson is a doctoral candidate at the University of Tennessee whose research interests include the cortical dynamics supporting speech perception and production. His areas of expertise include the sensorimotor processes distinguishing the production of fluent and stuttered speech.
