During a total lockdown, all perimeter doors are secured, and no one is allowed to enter the facility. In the event of an incident requiring lockdown, you will be notified by emergency personnel or through an emergency alert.

Shelter in Place

Shelter in place is initiated if it is unsafe to go outdoors, but it is safe to remain inside the building. Emergency management will inform campus personnel to shelter-in-place in the event of extreme weather, natural disasters, or hazardous material releases. You will be directed to shelter in place via a campus alert, emergency response personnel or a university official.

Inclement Weather

Severe weather conditions, including thunderstorms, high winds, and flooding, can impact campus operations. Be aware of and mindful of weather advisories and how to prepare appropriately for the incoming inclement weather. Changes to operations are communicated via the campus alert system.

Utility Problem

In the event of a suspected gas leak or power outage during business hours, notify Facilities Operations at 509-358-7994. Utility issues after hours or on weekends can be directed to Campus Security. For power outages, some facilities have backup generators that allow emergency lights and essential systems to continue running. Be prepared to evacuate if necessary.

Other Types of Incidents

Active Threat/Armed Intruder

If an armed intruder comes to campus, it is critical that faculty, staff, and students report it immediately and take protective actions. If you are in a classroom or office and you hear gunshots, do not move toward the sounds of possible gunfire. Move away from the area and seek shelter, avoid parking lots, and open areas. Lock your door and close blinds. Report what you are hearing to 911.

Bomb Threat/Suspicious Objects

If you receive a bomb threat via phone, alert a co-worker to call 911 and Campus Security at 509-358-7995 while you are on the phone with the caller. Try to obtain as much information as you can about the nature of the bomb threat (locations, time, etc.) to assist emergency response personnel. Suspicious objects should be reported to Campus Security at 509-358-7995. Notify your supervisor or call Campus Security at 509-358-7995. Lab supervisors must have a hazardous materials accident/release procedure in place to manage incidents effectively. Supervisors are to notify Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) of any spill at 509-358-7994.

Fire/Explosion

In the event of a fire, activate the building fire alarm system, call 911, and Campus Security at 509-358-7995.
