SUMMARY:CPPS 3-Minute Thesis Competition
DESCRIPTION:Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is an academic research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland (UQ)\, Australia. This event challenges graduate students to present a compelling speech about their research and its significance to non-academic persons in just three minutes using only one presentation image. 3MT® commenced in 2008 and is currently held in over 900 universities across more than 85 countries worldwide. \nThe competition highlights the research conducted by graduate students while developing research students’ ability to effectively explain their research in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. The winner of the college competition will advance to the all-WSU competition\, which will be held March 25 in Pullman.

SUMMARY:SPRC Seminar Presentation: Dr. Reto Huber
DESCRIPTION:The Sleep and Performance Research Center welcomes Dr. Reto Huber\, PhD\, University of Zurich\, to WSU Spokane on Tuesday\, March 10th\, 2026. He will be providing his seminar at 12:10 PM\, “From Sleep Oscillations to Learning: Insights from Phase-Locked Acoustic Stimulation”\, in SAC 147 and via Zoom. \nDr. Huber investigates the relationship between sleep oscillations and learning-related processes using a targeted perturbation approach. Brief\, non-arousing acoustic stimuli are delivered in a phase-locked manner to key non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep oscillations\, enabling selective modulation of slow waves\, sleep spindles\, and their hierarchical coupling. This approach provides mechanistic insights into how these oscillations are generated and how they support learning and memory consolidation. His lab further translates these findings to clinical contexts\, for example\, by examining how alterations in sleep electrophysiology contribute to disease mechanisms in pediatric epilepsy. \nDr. Huber has long and outstanding expertise in sleep and signal analysis with a focus on high-density electroencephalography (EEG) in combination with other neuroimaging techniques (MRI\, NIRS). His research currently focuses on the application of these techniques in pediatric populations with the goal of gaining insights into the relationship between brain maturation and sleep in health and disease. Most recently\, they established closed-loop auditory stimulation using high-density EEG in their lab to investigate causal relationships between neuronal patterns and behavioral outcomes. \nIn person: SAC 147 \nZoom Information: \n\nMeeting ID: 950 1476 4671\nPasscode: 341571\n\n

SUMMARY:TMP Seminar Series: Dr. Eric C. Holland MD\, PhD - Fred Hutch Cancer Center
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Translational Medicine and Physiology welcomes Dr. Eric C. Holland\, MD\, PhD\, Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington – School of Medicine\, Fred Hutch Cancer Center\, to WSU Spokane on Tuesday\, March 17\, 2026. He will be providing his seminar at 12:10 PM\, “Big Data Visualization and Mouse Models of Cancer\,”  in SAC 147 and via Zoom. \nDr. Holland has used RNA seq of large numbers of clinically annotated tumors to generate dimension-reduced reference landscapes. These landscapes show clusters of similar tumors\, subtypes\, that have specific outcomes and biology based on their expression patterns. Mouse models of tumor subtypes genetically driven by the mutations found in human tumors recapitulate the expression patterns of the human diseases and can be aligned with the human reference landscapes. \nDr. Eric Holland is a world-renowned physician-scientist who combines compassionate patient care with exacting laboratory research to discover more effective treatments for brain tumors. As a neurosurgeon\, Dr. Holland specializes in caring for patients with glioblastomas\, aggressive cancers that are the most common malignant brain tumors in adults. Dr. Holland has many accomplishments\, one is the development of mouse models of brain cancers\, which researchers use to unravel tumor biology and test new therapies. His landmark work with mouse models also revealed that glioblastoma is not one but several diseases\, a finding that is a first step toward tailoring treatment to individual tumors. Dr. Holland also studies the environment immediately surrounding tumor cells and how that neighborhood influences tumor formation and growth. \nIn person: SAC 147 \nZoom Information \n\nMeeting ID: 979 1292 6740\nPasscode: 804216
