SUMMARY:SPRC Seminar Presentation: Dr. Michael Sierks\, ASU-Tempe\, "Sleep disruption\, stress and risk of Alzheimer's disease"
DESCRIPTION:Location: SAC 147 or Zoom \nThe Sleep and Performance Research Center welcomes Dr. Michael Sierks\, Professor with Arizona State University\, Tempe\, to WSU Spokane on Tuesday\, October 6\, 2026.  He will be providing his seminar at 12:10pm\, “Sleep disruption\, stress and risk of Alzheimer’s disease“\, in SAC 147 and via Zoom. \nDr. Michael Sierks is a professor of chemical engineering in the School for Engineering of Matter\, Transport and Energy at Arizona State University. Sierks’ research interests include antibody-based therapeutics for treating neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzeimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases. Other areas of interest in the Sierks group include ligand/receptor interactions\, catalytic antibodies\, and enzyme mechanisms. \nTalk Abstract: Although Alzheimer’s disease\, AD\, is defined pathologically by amyloid plaques and tau tangles\, the generation of toxic variants of several neuronal proteins\, including amyloid beta\, tau\, and TDP-43\, is increasingly recognized as an early driver of disease progression. We have shown that several key variants of these proteins accumulate in neurons during the early stages of AD and represent promising blood-based biomarkers for early disease detection. We also found that these toxic variants are generated in wild-type mice following either acute stress\, induced by mild traumatic brain injury\, or chronic stress\, induced by sleep disruption. Distinct protein variants were associated with different behavioral outcomes\, with pronounced sex-dependent differences. Together\, these findings link acute and chronic stress to the generation of toxic protein variants implicated in the early pathogenesis of AD and support their potential utility as biomarkers of disease risk and progression. \nJoin Zoom Meeting from PC\, Mac\, Linux\, iOS\, or Android\nMeeting ID: 870 3553 3591\nPasscode: 175951

SUMMARY:Monthly Spark60 Educational Virtual Series
DESCRIPTION:Location: HUB (SAC 105) \nWatch live educational events in the HUB (SAC 105) hosted by Spark60. In his best-selling book\, For the Culture: The Power Behind What We Buy\, What We Do\, and Who We Want to Be\, award-winning marketer and University of Michigan professor Marcus Collins offers a street-tested\, academically grounded framework for understanding the invisible forces that shape what we buy\, what we do\, and who we want to be. Drawing on a century’s worth of data and hard-won experience – from spearheading digital strategy for Beyoncé to launching the Brooklyn Nets to driving iconic campaigns for Apple\, Nike\, McDonald’s\, and Google – Collins reveals the cheat codes that the world’s most influential brands use to spark collective action. What emerges is a genuinely different way of thinking about influence\, one that works whether you’re running a campaign\, leading a team\, or trying to build something that lasts.
