The majority of students are at the graduate or professional level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">But that won\u2019t stop the <a href=\"https:\/\/spokane.wsu.edu\/studentinvolvement\/aswsus\/\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Students of Washington State University Spokane<\/a> (ASWSUS) from connecting with fellow students and enhancing their experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><!--more--><span class=\"s2\">With students living and working in places all over Spokane, communicating with the student body can be a challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cOur campus is definitely an urban campus without dorms where students come for their classes, stay a little bit and then go home,\u201d said Pierce Robledo, this year\u2019s ASWSUS president. \u201cSo we need to reach out to them in ways other than just having fliers and posting them everywhere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Robledo said his team has relied on social media to reach students and is working to connect with student clubs on campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cWe see (student clubs) as the most involved students and we\u2019ve been working with their leaders to help plan events together so one person isn\u2019t planning events here and another there,\u201d he said. \u201cWe all kind of work together with the communication that we have. If somebody is planning something, we all share it as one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">ASWSUS has formed a Student Entertainment Board, a new branch of ASWSUS, to facilitate entertainment options on campus. It hosted an outdoor movie night during the first week of classes in addition to traditional bingo nights and more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2015\/12\/WSU-Spokane-Students.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1428\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2015\/12\/WSU-Spokane-Students-396x558.jpg\" alt=\"WSU Spokane Students\" width=\"200\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2015\/12\/WSU-Spokane-Students-396x558.jpg 396w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2015\/12\/WSU-Spokane-Students.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>Working with other clubs and other student leaders on campus meshes nicely with the inter-professional culture of WSU Spokane. Robledo and ASWSUS Vice President Karl Nacalaban have each embraced that culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThe way I have explained it to others is that we\u2019re going to have to work together in a hospital or somewhere for a patient, so why wait until we are in that setting?\u201d Nacalaban asked rhetorically. \u201cWhy not foster that kind of attitude now?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Both Robledo and Nacalaban are pharmacy students and came to ASWSUS after being involved in previous leadership groups. Robledo, from Las Vegas, Nev., was involved with student leadership as an undergraduate at the University of Nevada-Reno. He also served as ASWSUS Vice President during the 2014-15 school year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Nacalaban spent his undergraduate years at the University of Washington and was one of the leaders of his pharmacy class during his first year on the WSU Spokane campus. That experience and a desire to lead students of a different health sciences field led him to become involved with ASWSUS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI saw myself having a greater impact on the (campus) community than just my college,\u201d Nacalaban said. \u201cNot that the little things in a college aren\u2019t important, but that\u2019s just a small part of what the health profession actually encompasses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2015\/11\/8-Orientation-BBQ_27.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1334\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2015\/11\/8-Orientation-BBQ_27-396x264.jpg\" alt=\"WSU Spokane Students\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2015\/11\/8-Orientation-BBQ_27-396x264.jpg 396w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2015\/11\/8-Orientation-BBQ_27-792x528.jpg 792w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2015\/11\/8-Orientation-BBQ_27-990x660.jpg 990w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2015\/11\/8-Orientation-BBQ_27-1188x792.jpg 1188w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">The needs of students at WSU Spokane are different than those of students at other universities. The students at WSU Spokane are older, and some already have a family of their own.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Currently, there is no on-campus daycare, adding to the items many students have to juggle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cIt\u2019s definitely tough for them and I don\u2019t have a child myself but at the same time I can see where the struggle might be balancing being a student and being a parent,\u201d Robledo said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Robledo said another goal is to start the discussion of having some sort of student fitness center on campus. He knows it isn\u2019t something that will be resolved before his term is up, but he wants to lay the foundation for that issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cStudents really want that and I feel like it is something that we deserve, especially being a health sciences campus,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Robledo and Nacalaban are eager students who have a sincere appreciation for WSU Spokane. Robledo is visible and works to understand how the issues on campus impact students personally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cBecause we have such a small campus, everyone kind of gets to know each other on a personal basis,\u201d he said. \u201cIf people asked me to describe WSU Spokane, I\u2019d say think of it as a small city where you see each other all the time and you sort of build that personal connection with them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><em>Top image: T<\/em><i>op, L-R: Pierce Robledo, president, and Karl Nacalaban, vice president.
