Ledgerwood graduated from Gonzaga University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Williams began his day visiting Rogers and North Central high schools in Spokane, talking to students there and touring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/stories\/2014\/sep\/04\/north-centrals-institute-of-science-and\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NC\u2019s Institute of Science and Technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He talked about how he became a trauma surgeon, and encouraged students to be persistent, work towards their goals and do what they can to go to college.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2016\/03\/Mallory-Williams-4.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1703\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1703\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2016\/03\/Mallory-Williams-4-396x264.jpg\" alt=\"Mallory Williams WSU Spokane\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2016\/03\/Mallory-Williams-4-396x264.jpg 396w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2016\/03\/Mallory-Williams-4-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2016\/03\/Mallory-Williams-4-792x528.jpg 792w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2016\/03\/Mallory-Williams-4-990x660.jpg 990w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2016\/03\/Mallory-Williams-4.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Back at WSU Spokane, Williams gave a guest lecture called \u201cEmulating Eagles: Transforming Modern Diversity Thought in Medical Education.\u201d Williams used eagles as a metaphor because, as he said, they execute at a high level, are provocative mentors and they need superior vision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The eagles were seen as the leadership of medical schools, and leadership needs to lead diversity initiatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cYou gotta open some arms and somebody\u2019s gotta go in and hug you,\u201d Williams said in reference to diversity leadership being a two-way street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Williams noted that a lack of diversity is one reason medical the Liaison Committee on Medical Education places schools on probation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe have a diversity problem in medical education and we have to face that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Here at WSU Spokane,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.wsu.edu\/facultyandstaff\/yvette-roubideaux\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yvette Roubideaux<\/a>, our new associate dean for diversity, inclusion and leadership, is working to help promote diversity and inclusion with events and activities like these.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Williams\u00a0ended the day with an evening reception where he was able to meet staff and faculty on campus, as well as members of the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As for our emerging medical school, Williams said that the <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.wsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elson S.
