They have since secured more than $49 million in new grant funding for research centers and programs focused on physical and behavioral health, including <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/2018\/12\/06\/wsu-research-center-help-native-people-fight-alcohol-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">alcohol abuse<\/a> and chronic conditions such as <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/2016\/08\/26\/10-million-grant-study-disease-native-populations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high blood pressure<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/2019\/11\/07\/study-shows-fewer-american-indians-getting-heart-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">heart disease<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/2019\/09\/11\/researchers-studying-alzheimers-dementia-factors-among-native-populations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alzheimer\u2019s disease\/dementia<\/a>. A few examples include the creation of a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/2020\/07\/29\/wsu-scientists-develop-covid-19-tracking-tool-rural-areas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19 tracking tool for rural areas<\/a>, a twin study that looked at <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/2020\/09\/08\/covid-stress-may-hard-beat-even-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">changes in physical activity and mental health<\/a> during Washington State\u2019s stay-at-home order, and establishment of <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/2020\/06\/03\/new-collaborative-study-impact-covid-19-moms-babies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a new research collaborative<\/a> to study the impacts of COVID-19 on mothers, infants, and families.<\/p>\n<h3>Establishment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/napdicenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center of Excellence for Natural Product-Drug Interaction Research<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3041\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2020\/09\/Green-Tea-NatProdPage-800px-396x220.png\" alt=\"Green Tea\" width=\"528\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2020\/09\/Green-Tea-NatProdPage-800px-396x220.png 396w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2020\/09\/Green-Tea-NatProdPage-800px-792x440.png 792w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2020\/09\/Green-Tea-NatProdPage-800px-768x427.png 768w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2020\/09\/Green-Tea-NatProdPage-800px.png 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><br \/>\nLed by WSU, this NIH-funded, multi-institutional effort is working to <a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacy.wsu.edu\/2018\/05\/31\/part-3-napdi-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">develop standardized approaches<\/a> to identify and measure interactions between natural products and conventional drugs. Their work has used Washington State public data to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/2020\/02\/05\/report-shows-access-primary-care-doctors-linked-mortality-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">uncover links<\/a> between primary care access and mortality rates, ties between <a href=\"https:\/\/spokane.wsu.edu\/extra\/2018\/05\/23\/meet-a-scientist-pablo-monsivais-eating-habits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">neighborhood access to grocery stores and dietary patterns<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/2020\/01\/22\/premature-mortality-linked-race-socioeconomic-deprivation-washington\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">racial and socioeconomic disparities<\/a> in premature death rates, and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/2020\/06\/17\/centenarian-study-suggests-living-environment-may-key-longevity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">neighborhood factors<\/a> that influence one\u2019s chances of living to age 100.<\/p>\n<h3>Research to protect the occupational health and safety of essential workers<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3042\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2020\/09\/Lois-James-arms-crossed-396x265.jpg\" alt=\"Lois James\" width=\"528\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2020\/09\/Lois-James-arms-crossed-396x265.jpg 396w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2020\/09\/Lois-James-arms-crossed.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><br \/>\nScientists on our campus are conducting studies that are helping to keep essential workers\u2014such as <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/2018\/05\/01\/study-focuses-impacts-12-hour-shifts-nurses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nurses<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/2019\/11\/21\/college-nursing-researchers-focus-human-reaction-high-stress-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">police officers<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/spokane.wsu.edu\/extra\/2016\/11\/17\/wsu-spokane-research-tackles-drug-delivery-sleep-deprivation-genetics-fatigue-disaster-response\/#DisasterResponse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Guard members<\/a>\u2014healthy and safe on the job.
