{"id":444,"date":"2015-03-19T21:15:32","date_gmt":"2015-03-19T21:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spokane.wsu.edu\/extra\/?p=444"},"modified":"2015-04-20T22:05:19","modified_gmt":"2015-04-20T22:05:19","slug":"wsu-college-of-pharmacy-discovers-possible-fight-against-prostate-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spokane.wsu.edu\/news\/research\/wsu-college-of-pharmacy-discovers-possible-fight-against-prostate-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"WSU College of Pharmacy Discovers Possible Fight Against Prostate Cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The everlasting fight against cancer has seen progress for many years and will continue to do so.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Researchers in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pharmacy.wsu.edu\/?utm_source=about&amp;utm_medium=undefined&amp;utm_campaign=undefined&amp;utm_term=undefined&amp;utm_content=undefined\">WSU College of Pharmacy<\/a> on the WSU Spokane campus are doing their part and have discovered a possible fight against prostate cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Kathryn Meier (pictured below), a professor in the College of Pharmacy, and two students &#8211; Ze Liu and Mandi Hopkins &#8211; discovered that omega-3 fatty acids bind to a receptor called FFA4 (&#8220;free fatty acid receptor 4&#8221;) and stifle the growth of prostate cancer cells.<a href=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2015\/03\/k.meier_.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-447\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-spokane\/uploads\/sites\/456\/2015\/03\/k.meier_.jpg\" alt=\"Kathryn Meier WSU Spokane\" width=\"145\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Omega-3s can be found in some fish, seeds and nuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis kind of knowledge could lead us to better treat or prevent cancer because now we know how it works,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/2015\/03\/18\/researchers-show-how-fatty-acids-can-fight-prostate-cancer\/#.VQs1HLxdXZf\" target=\"_blank\">Meier told Eric Sorensen, WSU&#8217;s science writer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Meier&#8217;s study also found a drug that could mimic omega-3s.
