WSU Spokane staff and students volunteered their time during Spokane Gives Month earlier this year, helping the City of Spokane surpass its volunteer hours goal.
WSU Spokane’s Cougs in the Community joined students from Eastern Washington University, Gonzaga University, Spokane Falls Community College and Whitworth University to participate in the “Collegiate Challenge” during Spokane Gives. Here are some handy numbers from the month:
Students Involved | 3,607 |
Hours of Service | 21,655 |
Funds Raised | $7,191.53 |
In-kind Donations | 477 lbs of food, clothing, toiletries |
The original volunteer hours goal was 17,000. Our area universities shattered that goal. The 2016 number was also a 48 percent increase from 2015.
Each university volunteered in various ways. WSU Spokane helped paint over graffiti on the exterior of three local businesses in the East Sprague area and freshened up the paint on the building doors and windows during the Cleaning from the Core event.
Health sciences students from WSU Spokane and EWU also hosted a health fair at the East Central Community Center:

The number of volunteers and amount of volunteer hours is a testament to the generosity of college students in Spokane.
