Research Recruitment: Overtraining Study

Join a FREE 4-week High-Intensity Training Program

The Nutrition and Exercise Physiology Department is conducting a study aimed at examining the effects of a 4-week high-intensity cycling training program, followed by a 3-week recovery period. We want to better understand the body’s response to periods of intensified training!

We are looking for healthy adults (ages 18-50) who are: 

  • Recreationally active
  • Free from cardiovascular or pulmonary diseases
  • Able to exercise consistently five days per week for 4 weeks

In this study, you will:

  • Exercise regularly (5 days a week) for 4 weeks (Group 1) AND
  • Be tracked for recovery (once weekly) for 3 weeks (Group 1) or
  • Come in once a week for exercise and lung function testing for 7 weeks (Group 2)
  • Undergo exercise testing and body composition assessment (BodPod)
  • Regularly fill out questionnaires concerning your health and mood
  • Regularly provide blood, urine, and induced sputum samples
  • Regularly have your lung function assessed

Upon recruitment, subjects will be immediately randomized into either group1 or into group 2. Group 2 subjects will be asked to come in once a week for 7 weeks for exercise and lung function testing. Outside of testing days, group 2 subjects will be asked to maintain a normal and consistent lifestyle of exercise habits.
