Student Mentorship

Have you been inspired and/or supported in your educational career path by a mentors or mentors? Would you like to be that special someone for your Native American peers who are entering into your program of study and earn some money? We urge you to apply to be a mentor through Native American Health Sciences!

Requirements

  • Be enrolled for the 2022-2023 academic year at WSU in any of the following colleges or disciplines: Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Clinical Psychology, Speech and Hearing Sciences, Nutrition and Exercise Physiology, or any other allied health sciences where incoming Native American students are enrolled
  • Be in your second year of your program (have one full year of your program successfully completed)
  • Be able to provide mentorship about your program of study, campus support, share campus resources, answer questions and guide through your own pathway, while still succeeding in your own academics
  • Have a desire to help other students who are new and need support
  • Stay in consistent communication at least once a month with mentee(s) and the office of NAHS, Naomi Bender

What is a mentor?

  • A person who models knowledge, experience and/or skills in an area of focus, and who motivates, communicates, and supports the success of mentee(s)
  • Someone who can help the mentee(s) navigate and understand the organization, requirements and pathway of their program
  • Someone who can recommend different learning opportunities and introduce a mentee to a network of peers, faculty, staff and other resources

  • Mentor develops new leadership skills
  • Mentee(s) will have increased knowledge and confidence of their program and themselves
  • Mentee(s) develops team building skills
  • Helps both mentor and mentee(s) engage remotely
  • Enhance peer-to-peer collaborations and relationships
  • Resume building for both the mentor and mentee
  • Provides both the mentor and mentee an outlet of guided support
Apply to Become a Student Mentor

If you are selected to be a mentor, you will be paid $250 in September for the fall semester, and another $250 in late December for the spring semester, with the understanding that you will keep in contact with your mentee(s) at least once a month. You also commit to remaining in contact with the outreach and program coordinator to check in and provide updates once a month.
