Student Health Fee & Insurance
Student Health Fee
All students enrolled for seven or more credit hours in the fall and spring semesters and one or more in the summer are required to pay a mandatory student health and wellness fee per term. The Student Health Fee provides you with access to both in-person and virtual mental health services through Student Counseling Services.
It is important to note that this fee is not intended as a substitute for a health or medical insurance policy and does not cover care for dependents. Regardless of whether a student has government or private health care insurance, the university requires payment of the fee.
The Student Health Fee is $130 per semester.
Fee Coverage Dates
Fall Semester
Fall semester coverage begins on the Monday two weeks prior to the first day of classes and continues through December 31.
Spring Semester
Spring semester coverage begins on January 1 and continues through the week following commencement.
Summer Session
Summer session coverage begins the Monday after commencement and continues one week after the last day of the final summer session.
Summer Health Fee
Students who are enrolled in one or more credits in the summer are automatically charged the Health Fee. However, students returning in the Fall who are not enrolled in Summer can opt in and pay the fee to receive services.
Student Health Insurance
While health insurance is not required for most students, WSU highly recommends that all students carry it. Insurance helps you pay for your medical and mental health bills by covering some of the cost of clinic visits and procedures.
Insurance Coverage Options
- If you are under age 26, under the Affordable Care Act, you may stay on the insurance policy of an eligible parent, guardian, or other family member as a dependent until you turn 26. You can find more information on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services website.
- Students who do not qualify as a dependent on another person’s insurance and who are not eligible for one of WSU’s plans can also purchase a plan through the Washington Health Benefit Exchange. If you meet certain financial criteria, you may be eligible for Apple Health (Washington Medicaid).
- If you are a professional and graduate health sciences student, you may have access to WSU’s Health Sciences Student Insurance plan.
- If you are an international student, you may have access to WSU’s International Student Insurance plan.
- If you are a Graduate Student Assistant, you may have access to WSU’s Graduate Student Insurance plan.
