Tutoring, Writing and Learning Support

The Interprofessional Learning Commons (ILC) in WSU Spokane’s SAC 305 offers tutoring, writing and learning support, five group study rooms, study materials, and a student lounge with kitchen amenities. Lockers are also available in the ILC for student use. To sign up for a locker, email Jack Downs.

The ILC is open 24/7 to all registered WSU Spokane students. No reservation is required; just bring your student ID card and find a spot to connect and work with peers and friends.

Peer Tutoring

Peer tutoring provides the opportunity for students to learn from other students who have successfully advanced in their academic and professional programs. Peer tutors provide scheduled one-on-one and group drop-in tutoring for students in Pharmacy, Nursing (undergraduate), Speech and Hearing (graduate/undergraduate), and Nutrition and Exercise Physiology.

Individual tutoring is available via in-person sessions and remote meetings (Zoom). Contact Jack Downs for details.

Academic Writing and Professional Communication

Writing support in the ILC develops thoughtful writers who can effectively communicate within their professions and fields of study, including academic, scholarly, and professional writing. Current services and programming include:

  • One-to-one academic writing consultations for coursework and ongoing coaching and support for major writing and research projects, including honors theses, Master’s theses, DNP projects, PhD dissertations, and peer-reviewed publication submissions.
  • Topical workshops for delivery in class settings, upon request from program faculty.
  • Professional writing workshops and resources for grad school applications, CVs/resumes, personal statements, job letters, research statements, and other professional documents.
  • Consultations with health sciences faculty to develop writing pedagogy and assessment strategies.

University Writing Portfolio

The University Writing Portfolio is a mid-career writing assessment and a graduation requirement for all WSU undergraduate students. We can assist with coordinating the completion of your writing portfolio. For information and questions about the University Writing Portfolio, email Jack Downs.

Learning Strategies

The ILC provides support for learning strategies designed to help students understand how to be effective learners during their time at WSU and beyond. Current services include one-to-one learning strategies consultations to discuss test prep, time management, content retention, as well as tailored student success plans and workshops in coordination with academic programs. Services are available via in-person and remote sessions.
