History

The Health Sciences Library is the product of a merger of two libraries, the Betty M Anderson Library and Spokane’s campus library, which took place in 2006.

The Betty M Anderson Library, part of the Intercollegiate Nursing Education Center (ICNE) which enrolled its first class in 1969, served the nursing education programs in Spokane.

The Cooperative Academic Library Service (CALS) library on the Spokane (Riverpoint) Campus served Washington State University and Eastern Washington University programs housed in Spokane.

From 2006 – 2009, the ICNE program was acquired by Washington State University, and the new Riverpoint Campus Library was formed by combining the Betty M Anderson Library and CALS in the Kirk H. Schulz Academic Center. Materials from the Betty M Anderson Library were added to the WSU collection, and both the WSU and EWU collections were shelved together (interfiled) in the new space. The Riverpoint Campus Library served both WSU and EWU programs housed on the campus.

In 2010, the Riverpoint Campus became the Spokane Health Sciences Campus, and focused its programs on the health sciences. The library was renamed the Spokane Academic Library to reflect its home in the Kirk H. Schulz Academic Center building and to move away from the defunct Riverpoint campus name. Around the same time, the College of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences moved from its previous home on the Pullman Campus to the Spokane Health Sciences Campus.

From 2009 to 2022, the Spokane Academic Library continued to serve the WSU and EWU programs on campus, which included the newly formed Elson S Floyd College of Medicine. In 2022, Eastern Washington University withdrew as an owner of the Health Sciences Campus and the Spokane Academic Library. The EWU collection was returned to the Cheney campus, and the Spokane Academic Library ceased circulation services for EWU patrons.

In 2023, the library was renamed the Health Sciences Library to better describe the library’s role in the WSU system as the hub of health sciences information and library services.
