Library Use Policies

The Library is staffed during standard business hours, and is accessible 24/7 by card access for current WSU Spokane faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students. During staffed hours, the facility is also open to the public, and all services are available including Circulation, Reference, Printing and access to online resources through our computer terminals. Outside of staffed hours, services are limited to current WSU Spokane faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students, and consist of printing, using library computer terminals, study rooms, access to online resources and in-library use of the library’s physical collection.

The WSU Health Sciences Library requires all patrons to act in a way that is not disruptive to the use of the facility by others for study and scholarly purposes. Depending on the severity of the behavior, patrons may be asked to cease the behavior and/or to leave the facility. To view the University’s stance on specific behaviors, please visit the relevant pages:

Quiet Policy

The Health Sciences Library is intended to be a place of quiet study and research; please be considerate of those studying around you. Patrons and staff are expected to keep any conversation very low and quiet. A certain amount of noise should be expected at all public service desks where library staff members are assisting patrons. However, in other areas, both staff and patrons are expected to minimize their noise so as not to disturb people who are studying nearby. Radios, CD players and similar devices should not be used without personal earphones, and the volume should be set so as not to be disruptive of other library patrons.

Food & Drink Policy

Food and beverages are allowed in the Library. All who use the Library are expected to be responsible and courteous to others by disposing of trash and recyclables and by cleaning up any messes.

Use of the Library’s Computers

The Library supports principles of intellectual freedom. Priority is given to accessing library databases and supporting research and coursework. The Library reserves the right to require any library patron to discontinue using Library computers in a matter that violates WSU policies or applicable laws. Patrons are asked to limit their time on a library computer to one-hour.

Group Study Rooms

Group study rooms in the library are for use by WSU-affiliated patrons only. The rooms can be reserved up to 14 days in advance, up to 7 reservations per week, up to 2 hours at a time.

Cell Phones

Cell phones and similar devices should be set to silent or vibrate. Cell phone conversations should take place outside of the Library.

Health Sciences Library Community User Policy

Community members are welcome to use the Health Sciences Library during staffed hours. The Library is very happy to be assist members of our greater Spokane area community.

The Academic Center building and the Health Sciences Library are open to all during in-term staffed hours posted at the library entrance and on the library website.  After-hours or out-of-term access to the building and the Library is limited to WSU students enrolled in coursework on the Spokane campus and faculty and staff currently employed on the campus.

Since the core mission of the Library is to serve WSU Spokane students and faculty, community members may sometimes be asked to wait for services or to give up computers so that students and faculty can be served first. All patrons are expected to observe the Library’s Quiet Policy.

Community members may check out books from all of the WSU Libraries. Apply for a WSU Community User Card at the Circulation Desk. Identification is necessary to verify your current mailing address. Community User privileges do not include delivery of bound journal volumes, copies of journal articles, or interlibrary loan services.

WSU Libraries charge fines for lost books, and for books not returned when recalled. Printing and photocopying in the Health Sciences Library and at other locations across campus is available through the WEPA system.
