WSU Health Sciences Spokane Commencement Postponement & Virtual Celebration

Given the current prohibition against large gatherings in the state of Washington in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, traditional commencement ceremonies cannot be held on any of the WSU campuses as scheduled for early May 2020.  Washington State University leadership made this decision with careful consideration and recognize this situation is not what our graduates envisioned for their respective commencement.

WSU Spokane Vice President and Chancellor, Daryll DeWald, is committed to a meaningful commencement exercise and to recognizing the significant accomplishments of our graduates both on-line and in-person.

WSU will host an on-line system-wide commencement celebration on May 9, 2020.  WSU Health Sciences Spokane is currently working on details in conjunction with WSU, in which all graduates will be recognized and participate in this virtual celebration.  As details continue to be worked out, please know that we plan to recognize each individual student.  All graduates will receive communication and information on this virtual commencement plan from Student Affairs once details are finalized.

WSU Pullman is also planning an in-person commencement ceremony in August 2020.  WSU Health Sciences Spokane is yet to determine if a Spokane in-person ceremony would take place in August.  To help guide us in this decision, please click here to share whether this is something you would attend.  Spokane graduates would also have the opportunity to attend the in-person ceremony in Pullman.

We continue to appreciate the understanding and unwavering commitment to WSU as we remain focused on keeping Coug Nation safe during this ever-changing environment.

Please check this site regularly for ongoing updates with both the virtual commencement ceremony and the proposed in person ceremony in August.

All degrees will be conferred at the Commencement ceremonies in the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. Commencement ceremonies are a time when the campus community comes together to honor all graduates and their families.

Commencement refers to the ceremony, officiated by a designated university official, which is an opportunity for the students to share the excitement and importance of their academic accomplishments with peers, family, and friends. You must apply to graduate in order to participate in a commencement ceremony. Traditional caps and gowns are required. The event is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required to attend the event and graduates are not limited in the number of guests attending.

Please note that there may be a difference between graduation date and commencement date. The graduation date is the semester when all degree requirements (including internships) are completed. Students can participate in a commencement program prior to the actual graduation date, if a graduation application has been submitted.

Questions regarding Master’s or PhD degrees should be directed to WSU’s Graduate School.
