Transportation Alternatives

Driving is just one way to get to campus! Students and employees have access to alternative transportation options that can save money and reduce air pollution.

Spokane Bus System (STA)

The Spokane Transit Authority is Spokane County’s area public transit, offering extensive services to surrounding communities, including Airway Heights, Cheney, Medical Lake, Spokane Valley, and Liberty Lake. As a WSU student or employee, you have free access to STA bus lines, using your CougarCard or the STA Connect App.

Two bus routes serve the campus: #1 City Line and #6 Cheney. Additionally, routes #12 Southside Medical Shuttle, #14 South Adams/Napa, and #25 Division have stops within a 5 to 7-minute walk to the heart of campus.

Commute Trip Reduction

The Commute Trip Reduction program is a Washington State DOT-funded initiative that seeks to reduce the number of single-occupancy vehicles on the road.

The program features two key resources:

  • Commute Finder NW: Are you looking for a carpool or van pool partner? This site will also connect you with biking and walking partners, as well as bus information.
  • Commute Smart NW: Offers resources, incentives, and rewards for carpooling, vanpooling, biking, walking, telecommuting, and public transit to reduce single-occupancy vehicle commuting.

On the WSU Spokane campus, the CTR program offers a guaranteed ride home in the event of an emergency (for registered, active participants only). You may register for the campus CTR program by contacting Parking and Transportation Services.

Carpooling

Parking and Transportation Services collects names and locations of people interested in car- and vanpools. Contact us at (509) 368-6999 to discuss carpooling options.

Bicycling

With close proximity to the Centennial Trail, bicycling to the Spokane campus can be a great way to get some exercise. Shower and locker facilities are available in several campus buildings for those wishing to change clothes or store gear before or after their ride.

Cyclists are encouraged to register their bicycles with Campus Security and use a U-lock to secure them to campus bike racks, which helps deter theft.
