Washington State University Health Sciences Spokane

Microscopy

The WSU Health Sciences Spokane Microscopy Service Center is a state-of-the-art light microscopy facility. It is a shared resource at WSU Spokane that supports the university and the greater Inland Northwest research community.

We are equipped with both widefield and point-scanning confocal microscopes capable of imaging live or fixed cells and tissues.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Health Sciences and Services Authority of Spokane County (HSSA) for their financial support to purchase the Olympus IX-81 confocal microscope.

Olympus FluoView1000/IX81 confocal microscope system

The capability of confocal microscopy is performing optical sectioning of thick biologic samples (tissues or cells) and three-dimensional reconstruction of images that are collected. Optimized for live-cell imaging applications, the Olympus FluoView1000 laser scanning confocal and IX81 motorized inverted microscope with deconvolution offers increased stability and brightness needed for long-term live-imaging experiments. Superior frame stability, vibration-free operation, and focus drift compensation make the IX81 well suited for stable observations such as patch clamping. Ultra-precise Z-axis motor with 10nm step size is ideal for optically sectioning during deconvolution or confocal imaging. Four ports offering simultaneous access to a primary image allows spectral separation with multiple detectors for real time, multi-color, co-localization imaging. Additional capabilities include multi-area time lapse, spectral scanning, FRET/FLIP/FRAP, 3D/4D reconstruction, and 3D mosaic imaging.

New WSU Health Sciences Spokane users

To gain access to the microscopy suite in PBS 230N, you will first need to contact Spokane lab services to receive training. Untrained personnel are not permitted in the microscopy suite.

The  Microscopy Service Center is open to both researchers within WSU Health Sciences Spokane and external researchers. Users from outside institutions will need to coordinate with Spokane lab services regarding billing and access prior to using the service center.

New users from other institutions

Please contact Spokane lab services to arrange a meeting to discuss your project. Arrangements for scheduling training sessions, appointments, billing, and other matters will be determined at that time.

Microscope calendar

Please use the  Sharepoint Calendar to schedule time in the microscopy service center. Contact Spokane lab services if you are trained but need help accessing the calendar.
