Jobs and Internship Databases

Handshake

Employers want to reach you and advertise their positions on their company websites and other venues. Handshake is WSU’s database that is connected to other universities through the USA. Together with other universities, we review employers and job postings to ensure that they are legitimate offers for employment. Plus, if an employer wants to hire a Coug, we direct the employer to post there! Employers registered on Handshake can search profiles and reach out to you as well—and you can do the same! Employers are excited when a student reaches out to them.

Career events across the campus are located on Handshake. To meet WSU’s goal of OneWSU, we make sure our events are hybrid models as much as possible to share the events across the WSU system. Last year in 2020, we held virtual career fairs over Handshake, including a Health Sciences driven one in July. It was a great success! Students and employers report that they preferred the venue because they were not distracted by the environment. It was a positive one-on-one experience. We encourage you to explore Handshake.

State Resources for Job Databases

Worksource

Learn about unemployment benefits, attend hiring fairs or apply for jobs that are advertised through Washington State department of labor.

Government Jobs Portal

The largest public sector job board in the nation. Many state, county, and city governments advertise to this job board in Washington and in others states. However, if you are interested in the federal government, you will need to visit their website: USAJobs.gov

Internships

The only thing better than an internship is an actual job! However, internships do differ from jobs because you can negotiate learning objectives and agree on tasks that may not be available on a job. Internships, because you are not a permanent fixture of the business, allow a student the ability to do more observing and have supervision standards that allow for more feedback. These are great opportunities to get work experience in the industry as well as professional references in the industry.

Informational Interviews

Searching for internships is a great way to find an employer who is willing to post and actively recruit students. As we know, recruitment takes a lot of time, energy and money for an employer. HR may not have the time to recruit, but the worker/manager at a work site may be willing to mentor and provide an internship experience. If you have professional contacts, please reach out to them! Or expand your circle by doing informational interviews. We hold workshops about informational interviews, so please attend a workshop or reach out to find out more information about this.
